Most people come to building their own AI system through privacy. And owning your AI system is definitely one way to keep your data private.
But I’d argue privacy is a side effect of something much more important — ownership. That’s what this lesson is about.
What ownership unlocks
1. A system that compounds for you, not a big tech platform. The more we use an AI system, the better it gets to know us and the more helpful it becomes. More use → more helpful → more use. That flywheel either compounds for you or for someone else. When you own your AI system, it compounds for you.
2. A system you know is working for you, not someone else. As AI agents begin to act on our behalf, it’s going to be extra important that we know those systems are acting in our best interests — not in the interests of whoever built the platform. The value of many knowledge workers is going to depend on their ability to leverage AI. When you own your AI system, the systems and automations you build into it travel with you — to a new business you’re starting, or a new job where the company is paying you for the expertise inside both your physical brain and your digital brain.
3. A future where AI benefits flow far and wide. By owning your own AI system, you’re not only benefiting yourself — you’re helping build a future where the benefits of AI flow widely instead of being owned and controlled by just a few big tech companies.
