Starting The BrainDrive Marketplace on Discourse

The Challenge: Building the Right Marketplace

We know that a Big Tech-style marketplace isn’t the answer. BrainDrive is about ownership, freedom, and empowerment, and that means ensuring that:

  • Developers fully own their plugins and extensions
  • There are no restrictive app store rules or high fees
  • BrainDrive owners can run their own independent marketplaces if they choose
  • Everything remains aligned with our values of openness and decentralization

Given this, we explored several approaches before deciding where to begin.

The Options We Considered

Here’s a look at some of the marketplace models we explored:

1. A Full Custom Marketplace (Not Yet)

We considered building a fully featured marketplace with payments, listings, and license management.

Why not now?

  • High complexity—We’d need to build and maintain a payment system, licensing infrastructure, and plugin vetting from day one.
  • Too centralized—A single BrainDrive-controlled store could feel too much like a traditional app store.
  • Not aligned with our open ecosystem goals.

This is something we’ll work toward, but for now, we need something lighter and more flexible.

2. Decentralized Marketplaces (Future Potential)

We explored fully decentralized options like OpenBazaar or smart contract-powered sales.

Pros: No central authority, censorship-resistant.
Cons: Requires complex blockchain setup and isn’t beginner-friendly for most BrainDrive users today.

We still love this idea, but for now, we need something easier to adopt.

3. Discourse (The Best Starting Point)

We ultimately decided to start small by using Discourse, the community platform we’re already using.

  • Fast and simple to set up—No new software needed.
  • Leverages the BrainDrive community—Developers can interact directly with users.
  • No lock-in—Developers can share free or paid plugins however they choose.
  • Community-driven quality control—Users can give feedback, reviews, and ratings naturally.
  • Flexible—Developers retain full control over their work, and BrainDrive owners can run their own independent marketplaces later.

What This Means for You

  • We’re creating a new category in Discourse where developers can list and share their BrainDrive plugins.
  • There will be no marketplace fees, no restrictions—just a place to connect, share, and collaborate.
  • Over time, based on real-world usage and community feedback, we’ll expand into a more advanced marketplace model.

The Future of the BrainDrive Marketplace

This is just the beginning. Discourse is our launchpad, not the final destination.

As the ecosystem grows, we’ll explore:

  • A better discovery and ranking system for plugins
  • Built-in payments (Fiat, Crypto, BrainDrive Credits)
  • A way for BrainDrive owners to run their own marketplaces
  • Decentralized selling options

What We’d Love from You

Since this is a community-driven approach, your input matters. Let us know:

  • What features do you want to see as the marketplace grows?
  • How can we improve the plugin-sharing experience?
  • Any thoughts on future marketplace models?

We’re building this together. This is your AI. Your rules. And now—your marketplace.

Let’s make it happen.
