Welcome to lesson 1 of the How to Partner with AI to Define & Reach Your Goals free course.
I’m Dave Waring, co-creator of BrainDrive.ai and your instructor for this course.
For almost all of history, having real experts on your side was a luxury.
Wealthy people had financial advisors, personal trainers, career coaches, and tutors on retainer.
People who knew their situation, remembered their goals, and helped them figure out what to do next. Everyone else got generic advice and figured it out alone.
AI just changed this.
Today AI that has read more medicine, law, finance, fitness, psychology, and career advice than any human expert who has ever lived is available to everyone.
Free to start. About the price of a streaming subscription for the good stuff.
Think about that for a second.
The thing that used to separate people with resources from everyone else, access to experts who know you and work on your behalf, is now available to basically everyone.
But you have to know how to partner with AI to make it work for you. And that’s what this course is about.
The distinction that matters: answers vs. a partner
Here is where most people get stuck. They open an AI, type a question, get an answer, and close the tab. Used this way, AI is a slightly better search engine. Helpful, but nothing close to what it can be.
An expert partner is different from an answer machine, and the difference has nothing to do with the AI getting smarter. It comes down to how you work with it.
Picture the difference between looking up “how to lose weight” and having a trainer who knows your schedule, your knee injury, what you ate last week, and what happened the last three times you tried. Same expertise. Completely different value. The generic answer is on a pamphlet. The partner’s answer is about you.
The expertise is already in the AI. What’s missing is you.
What a partner needs (and you control both)
Every great advisor relationship, human or AI, runs on two things:
- Context. What it knows about you. Your situation, your goals, your constraints, your history. An expert who knows nothing about you can only give pamphlet advice, no matter how brilliant they are.
- A process. How you work together. A good advisor doesn’t wait for perfect questions. They interview you, play back what they heard, help you make a plan, and check in on how it’s going.
That’s it. That’s the whole unlock. Give the AI real context and a real process, and it stops acting like a search engine and starts acting like an expert who’s on your team.
Both of those things are yours to control. That fact matters more than it might seem right now. We’ll come back to it in Lesson 3.
Try it right now
Here’s a small taste of what the partnership feels like. Open whatever AI you already use and paste this:
I want your help with a goal: [describe it in one sentence]. Before you give me any advice, interview me. Ask me one question at a time until you actually understand my situation. Then tell me what you heard, and we’ll go from there.
Notice what happens. Instead of a wall of generic advice, you get a question. Then another one that builds on your answer. Somewhere around the fourth or fifth question, most people have a small “oh” moment: it’s usually a question they hadn’t thought to ask themselves.
That’s the difference between asking AI things and partnering with it. And that’s a two-line prompt. It gets much better from here.
Where this course goes
This is the first of five lessons, each one building on the last. The full syllabus is on the course home.
One note on tools: everything in this course works in whatever AI you already use. In Lesson 4, I’ll show you BrainDrive as one way to set up an AI system of your own, but the method and the principles are yours no matter whose software you run.
For the first time, the kind of expert help that used to be reserved for people with money is available to anyone willing to learn how to use it. Most people won’t bother. It’s not hard, it’s just new.
You’re a lesson in already.
