Hi All,
Dave J and I discussed what we’re calling the “BrainDrive Marketing Flywheel” in today’s weekly dev call livestream. I cut that portion of the video out and posted below along with a full explanation of what the BrainDrive Marketing Flywheel is, and how we plan to execute it.
Questions, comments, concerns, and ideas welcome as always. Just hit the reply button.

BrainDrive Marketing Flywheel Overview Recording:
Full Explanation:
The BrainDrive Marketing Flywheel:
-
Offer free value → Drive awareness with our target persona by creating high-quality, free, and no-strings-attached resources that allow natural placement for BrainDrive.
-
Promote in existing ecosystems → Share where open-source, self-hosted AI communities (and our target persona) already gather.
-
Engage in our own community → Welcome people discovering BrainDrive via these resources into BrainDrive’s forums, discussions, and projects.
-
Incentivize contribution → Incentivize members to build, share, and extend the ecosystem.
-
Promote ecosystem products & services → Highlight offerings from across the ecosystem, including those offered by BrainDrive LLC.
Spin the flywheel
Ship more free “make-it-easy” value → promote into existing + BrainDrive channels → activate new Owners → reward contributions and commerce → amplify the best ecosystem products → reinvest revenue into more free value.
1. Offer Free Value
The foundation of our free value is our MIT Licensed BrainDrive software. This includes the front end and backend system, and the plugins that we will be offering around specific use cases for your own AI system.
We also have BrainDrive ModelMatch which recommends the best open source models for specific use cases, allows interested parties to use our evaluation tool, and we’ve even open sourced the code for the tool so anyone can modify and use it.
There is an unlimited amount of content that we can create around this foundation which will resonate with our target persona.
Examples include educational content such as “how to run a local AI system on your computer”, use case specific content such as “how to build your own content team using AI”, and “what’s the best AI model for xyz use case?”.
This content gives away a lot of value for free, and allows very natural placement for BrainDrive.
2. Promote in Existing Ecosystems
There are already many open source and user owned AI enthusiasts active online in various existing communities. Examples include those discussing such topics on social platforms such as x, and gathering in online communities such as Local LAMMA on Reddit.
There is also significant and growing search traffic across both Google and Youtube for people interested in user owned AI related topics.
Because both our content and the product we are featuring in that content is free and directly related to the topics being discussed in these communities, this significantly lowers the friction of marketing our content to the existing ecosystem.
Promotion Channels:
- Direct Outreach: Across Platform
- Video SEO: BrainDrive Youtube Channel
- SEO: Long form Forum Posts, Reddit
- Commenting: Reddit, X, Linked via personal profile
3. Engage in our Own Community
Once our target persona has learned about BrainDrive via one of our free resources, and wants more, we direct them to BrainDrive.ai. Here they can download and install BrainDrive for free and join the community at community.braindrive.ai.
The BrainDrive software is what allows them to own, build, and customize their own AI system for free so that’s the value on that front.
In the community they will find:
- Free support with any technical or other issue or question they have about BrainDrive from the co-creators.
- Free educational resources on how to own, build, and benefit from their own AI system using BrainDrive.
- Real Time updates on the project and the various areas of progress from the co-creators.
- The ability to find BrainDrive plugins they can add to their BrainDrives that others have built, and the ability to list their own plugins if they build them.
- Over time a vibrant community of other like minded individuals who are excited about building the future of user owned AI together.
Email marketing will be the primary distribution and retention channel for the community once someone has joined.
4. Incentivize Contribution
We will incentivize contribution by:
- Making it easy to contribute via good-first-issue labels, plugin starter kits concise contribution guide, clear docs, efficient PR review, responsive support forum, and weekly office hours.
- Building in public with public roadmap + RFCs, weekly changelog, decision logs, and Code of Conduct with consistent moderation.
- Recognizing and celebrating contributors - Release-note credits, forum badges/titles, “Plugin of the Month,” case studies, third party content and support highlights, optional referral letters for major impact.
- An open marketplace where contributors and build and sell to the community
- Contests and bounties for important projects that are needed by the commons
5. Promote ecosystem products & services
