Welcome to Lesson 2 of the How to Own Your AI System course.
Now that you understand WHY you want to own your AI system, let’s look at WHAT you’re actually owning.
Every AI system - whether it’s ChatGPT or one you build yourself - has five essential components.
Component 1: The Interface
How you interact with your AI. The chat window, the buttons, the experience. The interface is your entry point to everything.
With ChatGPT they’re in control. You’re stuck with their interface and how they’ve decided you should use their system.
When you own your system you’re in control. That means your free to design and use it however you want:
- Design interfaces that match your exact needs - from writing assistants to data analysis tools
- Build custom dashboards for specific business workflows
- Share your custom interfaces with others
- Switch interfaces whenever you want
It’s your interface, and your rules.
Component 2: The AI Models
The actual intelligence - GPT-5, Claude, Llama, Mistral etc.
With ChatGPT, you only get their models (and biases) and you must send everything to their servers.
There’s no option to keep your data local and private.
When you own your system, you’re free to use any model you want, and can even use multiple models at once.
Want complete privacy?
Choose an AI model that can run locally on your own computer without even needing an internet connection.
Want state of the art performance?
Use the API’s from providers like OpenAI and Anthropic to leverage the same AI models used in ChatGPT and Claude.
With your own AI system it’s not an either or proposition. You’re free to have your cake and eat it too.
Component 3: The Storage & Memory
Where your conversations and data live.
With ChatGPT, everything lives on their servers and can only be used with their AI models and system.
The more you use ChatGPT the better it gets to know you, and the more locked into their system you become.
When you own your AI system your data stays under your control.
The more you use your own AI system the better it gets to know you, and the more locked into your own system you become.
The difference when you own your own AI system however, is you hold the key.
That means you’re free to use your data not only with your own system, but other systems as well.
Component 4: The Hosting
Where the system physically runs.
With ChatGPT, it runs on OpenAI’s servers. Your data is sent to them for processing, and they control everything.
When you own your system, you’re free to run it on your own computer, your own server, or a hosting provider you trust.
You’re in control.
Component 5: The Connections
How your AI connects to other tools and systems - your documents, databases, calendars, email, business tools.
With ChatGPT, they connect for you - which means you’re trusting them with those connections and all the data flowing through them.
When you own your system, you make the connections yourself and are free to decide what integrates, how it connects, and who has access.
The Control Difference
Here’s the key difference:
With Big Tech AI, they control ALL FIVE components. You get access, but they make every decision - what models you use, where your data goes, how the interface works, where it’s hosted, and what you can connect.
When you own your AI system, YOU control these components.
You’re not stuck under Big Tech’s control. You’re free to do as you please.
And thanks to platforms like BrainDrive, you don’t have to be a tech genius to do it.
I’ll show you how in the next lesson. See you there.
